What is Developmental Language Disorder/ Language Disorder?
  • Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) refers to a child with a language disorder without a known biomedical condition
  • Language Disorder associated with{biomedical condition e.g. Autism Spectrum Disorder} is used when a child has been diagnosed with a biomedical condition known to impact language development
  • Children fail to show typical language development
  • Difficulty in understanding and or expressing language
  • Affecting everyday interactions or educational progress
Symptoms of Developmental Language Disorder/ Language Disorder
  • Delayed in the use of single words compared to peers
  • Weak in receptive language – e.g.  unable to follow instructions, difficulty understanding stories and questions
  • Weak in expressive language – e.g. limited vocabulary, difficulty producing complete sentences, unorganized narratives with no or little details
Causes of Developmental Language Disorder/ Language Disorder
  • Developmental Disorder:
o Family history/ genetic cause
o Lacks language stimulation

 

  • Language Disorder associated with biomedical condition:
o Down syndrome
o Autism Spectrum Disorder
o Intellectual disability
o Hearing impairment
o Brain injury
o Neurological conditions, e.g. cerebral palsy

•The Program for Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills (PEERS®)
