What is Speech Sound Disorder?
  • As children grow, different speech sounds emerge gradually at different ages
  • Many children have speech sound errors during their language development
  • If inappropriate speech sound errors persist in speech production
  • May negatively impact social interaction, academics, and self-esteem
Symptoms of Speech Sound Disorder
  • Substitution, omission or distortion of speech sounds, resulting in reduced speech intelligibility
  • Common speech sound errors:
  • Backing– Replacing front sounds with back sounds (e.g.  say "go"  for "dough" )
  • Fronting – Replacing back sounds with front sounds (e.g. say  "door"  for  "core" )
  • Devoicing– Replacing voiceless sounds with voiced sounds (e.g.say "pig"  for  "big"
  • Gliding – Replacing  a glide (w, y) sound for a liquid (l, r) sound (e.g.  say  "rug" for "rug")
Causes of Speech Sound Disorder
  • Developmental delay
  • Hearing impairment
  • Oral motor muscles weakness/ incoordination
  • Oral motor structural problems
  • Neurological factors – Motor Speech Disorders (Apraxia)
